The Print Club of Rochester:
89th Annual Members Exhibition
Exhibition dates: August 15 – September 18, 2020
An exhibition showcasing the work of 21 members of the Print Club of Rochester along with a selection of presentation prints from the club's archive.
Artwork copyright is retained by each artist.
History of the Print Club
Founded in 1930, The Print Club of Rochester has a 90 year love affair with the fine art of printmaking and prints. Originally established by 22 print-lovers, the club has continued and grown into the longest continually running print club in the United States. Today the club is committed to the encouragement of traditional and contemporary methods of printmaking.
About the show at MSA
This year’s members exhibition is a little different from years past—for one, it includes a mini retrospective of selected prints from the club’s archive— but it was also curated by Main Street Arts’ executive director and curator, Bradley Butler. “I knew I wanted to work with the print club on this exhibition when they approached me, as marking their 90th year is an important milestone in the club’s history. I also wanted to have some input on the outcome of the exhibition and be a part of it’s formation. The members submitted their work ahead of time and I was able to select specific works to build a strong show.” Each member who entered has at least one piece included in the exhibition.
Best in Show: Madeline Corsaro — "Meditative II"
The dark and moody scene depicted in Madeline Corsaro’s Meditative II brought me in right away. For me, there is always something elusive and evocative in the shadows—in art and in life—and the details that fade into darkness leave me wondering where I am and how I got there. What more can I ask for in a work of art!? The faint hint of a shack on the edge of a cliff surrounded by leafless trees brings to mind an atmospheric setting that I faintly remember from a dream.
Juror's Choice: Myles Calvert — "Emerging Details"
This piece was chosen for its use of layering. I find the interplay between the two layers of translucent handmade paper keeps me looking at this print. The way the two layers are slightly out of register causes my eyes to re-focus and look again. It also makes me think of a long exposure photograph, indicating that perhaps these objects were in motion as the shutter snapped, which is counter to what we know of ottomans.
Juror's Choice: Carol Acquilano — "Plant Glow"
Just as with the other two award winners, I was immediately drawn to this print by Carol Acquilano. This piece is aptly titled Plant Glow, as it really does seem to glow! There are subtle atmospheric sections where the mottling of the overlapping orange and blue inks creates an illusion of shadow and it makes me wonder what's beyond the glowing plants in the foreground. It also has an otherworldly quality to it, and while I know this image depicts plants that Carol has seen, they feel like they are not of this world.

Juror's Statement
From the Print Club's president…
"When I first joined, the club was offering studio visits, demonstrations and portfolio presentations. The members were welcoming and clearly loved sharing their knowledge. They were incredibly well versed in a wide variety of printmaking methods, many of which I was unfamiliar with and had never tried. The presentations were informative, educational and inspiring. I became eager to sample all these methods. It was also wonderful to be around other artists who shared the same passion for printmaking!"

SOMETHING HERE
"I am amazed by the archive and the long list of prominent printmakers who have made these Presentation Prints. This has been done annually since 1934 and the list reads like a 'Who’s Who' of printmaking – Clare Romano, Charles Hewitt, Karen Kunc, Dan Welden, Carol Wax, and Tom Huck just to name a few. There are also local well-known printmakers like James D. Havens, Robert Marx, and Harvey Breverman. Even more amazing is the opportunity to meet these artists as they come to the Rochester area to exhibit and present their work."
— Print Club of Rochester president, Katherine Baca-Bielinis
There are 25 of the Print Club's presentation prints included in this exhibition but if you'd like to see the archive in its entirety, visit the Print Club of Rochester website. Learn about each of the artists and the techniques used.

Presentation Prints
Shortly after its inception, the Print Club of Rochester
began the tradition of annually commissioning a prominent artist/printmaker to create an original print edition for the membership.
This year' members exhibition includes a secondary exhibition on our second floor. This is a mini retrospective of selected prints from the club’s archive and 90 year history.
